Emulating Steve McQueen – Style Icon and the Ultimate In Cool

“I live for myself and answer to nobody.” –  Steve McQueen

Almost 40 years after his death, Steve McQueen’s legacy still remains. His effortlessly cool outfits with just the right amount of edge helped build his bad boy persona and continue to inspire many today.

Rugged with just a hint of sartorial splendour – McQueen’s most iconic looks include well-tailored three-piece suits paired with Persol 714 sunglasses, his signature Baracuta Harrington jacket and understated roll neck jumpers under a fitted blazer. Not one to follow rules and unphased  by the latest trends, he often donned double denim with a pair of desert boots – a look that is notoriously difficult to pull off, yet he managed it with ease.

His confidence gave him the ability to look as comfortable in bespoke tailoring as he did in a leather jacket. A bit of a style chameleon, McQueen could switch up his looks between the red carpet and the racetrack. He did everything on his own terms, and was known for his ruthless interviews and charming yet nonchalant attitude. This made him the epitome of 60s counterculture – a time when opposition to societal norms was the essence of coolness.

It’s no surprise that the actor still holds the title of the King of Cool – an authentic anti-hero from the streets who went on to become a star of the silver screen. To find out more about the man, movie star and legend, check out this piece by ROX

Justin Bieber introduces streetwear brand DREW!

WORDS BY ISAAC PERRY

DREW HOUSE – ”Drew House is a place where you can be yourself. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAHSDBKSJDHFL. Wear like you don’t care. Come Chill. K. Bye.”

Justin Bieber has been in the limelight since the tender age of 13 becoming a youtube sensation with his career only flourishing from there. In his earlier years, Justin’s style was what you could call questionable! In the last 5 years, he has become a street style icon for some, often being pictured on a daily basis! Justin was one of the first to have been seen and basically became the face of, the highly respected, the Fear of god brand/style. Recently, unless you have been living under a rock, you would’ve heard his nuptials to supermodel girlfriend, now wife Hailey Baldwin (Bieber) in a secret ceremony but more importantly to us he has created his very own streetwear brand! For those of you who don’t know, I’m kinda thinking that this might count for a lot of you,  Justin’s middle name is Drew and this is what he has named his most recent business venture.

Recently a style which some have called Sleazecore has become very popular with celebs like Jonah Hill, Pete Davidson and the main man Justin Bieber being key faces in this new phenomenon and we believe his brand Drew is taking massive inspiration from this latest trend. A lot of the designs from the brand simply have ‘Drew’ printed across them or have the classic smiley, Acid House, emoji. The collection consists of Tshirts, Hoodies and Shorts ranging between $48 to $148(£35-£125) but considering that all of the products are made ethically in LA this is a balanced price point to be sat at and would highly recommend checking it out.

The collection has that retro aesthetic which may be a throwback for a few of you. Split into two capsules the first features a range of brown & beige corduroy which has ‘DREW’ printed across the front of the majority of these pieces. The second features some more vibrant colours with red and yellow t-shirts seen!

The first product released by the brand was a classic pair of hotel slippers with the brands smiley face logo for the small price of $5 but these sold out in a matter of hours! One of  Justin’s most recent Instagram posts hinted he could be venturing in the jewellery game with his brand! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

It’s Time to Talk – Try a Men’s Group

These days, talking about our mental health is becoming more and more commonplace in society. But for all the progress we’ve made, many men still sit in the dark rather than being a open and honest. In honour of Time to Talk Day – honestly, I’m not making that up, which focuses on bringing together the right ingredients needed to have a conversation about mental health – we caught up with men’s personal development consultant, Kenny Mammarella-D’Cruz, to share his reasons why men’s groups are the most effective method when it comes to therapy for the modern man! Here’s the lowdown:

1. Everyone is equal – in traditional therapy sessions, the therapist is often perceived as superior and therefore as the authority. However, these style of groups are peer based, everyone is equal, everyone takes part however they choose, and everyone gets to learn from each other’s successes and failures without a superior. At MenSpeak men’s groups, power isn’t handed over to anyone else, it is shared and explored in a group without hierarchy, so everyone knows how to wield it in daily life.

2. Greater freedom – in many therapeutic relationships, men know they are going to be committed for the long haul, where in MenSpeak men’s groups, they can choose a drop-in live or online group or a closed group with a short fixed-term commitment and renew their commitment for years to come should they choose.

3. Gain perspective – This style of men’s groups will expose you to a cross-section of men with different backgrounds, stories, ages, racial origins and identifications, sexual orientations, and different stages of change and growth in their lives. All men benefit from such a broad range of experiences and feedback. Traditional therapy can be a more distant, clinical environment with less camaraderie.

4. Leave the past behind – the past is important – as the saying goes ‘You can’t heal what you can’t feel’ – however, too much focus on the past can carry over into excessive thinking and constant self-evaluation, which can make men self-absorbed. So, instead of focusing excessively on the past, men’s groups puts the focus on learning how to be your own man, getting real with the past, accepting the present and with other men by your side, working toward a brighter future with self-awareness and support.

5. Make friends – Men attending MenSpeak men’s groups have made lifelong friends with other guys, without any restrictions on how to be. In many longstanding relationships the old childhood roles, youthful Tomfoolery and social drinking groups with boyish banter and limited depth can be difficult to change. What these groups have in common is that they want more out of life and we’re up for personal growth and change – with other good men who bring out the best in us. MenSpeak men’s groups enable men to leave feeling more passionate, powerful and ready to take on the world !

The Affordable Alternative – Battle of the Sneaker brands

WORDS BY DANIEL RAMSDALE-HARRIS

Today we have the 2nd edition of The Affordable Alternative. This month we take a look the two best most recent sneaker comparisons for all you sneakerheads out there. Both releases from footwear giants Nike and Adidas caused long winded debates about the brand’s stances on authenticity, but are you choosing to spend big or save that hard-earned cash?

Off-White X Nike

Nike

Off-White & Nike or just Nike?

Before Nike released the highly anticipated 9th shoe of their “The 10” collection with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh – an Off-White spin on the classic Air Force 1. They released their Air Force 1 Utility pack, which stunned sneakerheads worldwide due to their identical look.

A genius business ploy? In my opinion yes. The creation of the Utility Air Force 1 fulfils Nike’s goal of cultivating more people into the sneaker community, and off course, a massive increase in sales, as it plays on Off-White’s signature motifs at a fraction of the price.

Sneakerheads will argue that the silhouette decreases the authenticity and exclusivity of the collaboration with Off-White, but with one priced at a resale mark-up of roughly £300 pounds and the other at £80, it leaves consumers with that affordable option.

Adidas Yeezy 700 Static

Adidas Yung 1’s

Adidas Yeezy 700 Static or Adidas Yung 1’s?

Another sneaker comparison for all you sneakerheads out there, this time with Nike’s most fierce rivals, Adidas.

The Yeezy ranges have become a worldwide phenomenon, in fact, they are so popular, most dad’s and mums are likely to know what they are. The latest Yeezy to release are the Static 700’s, which play on the ‘Dad’ shoe trend with a chunkier and more detailed sole. These Yeezys have been a huge hit, resulting in a sell-out of its retail price of £250and now warranting a £350 price tag on the resale market.

With the popularity clearly on show, Adidas decided to come out with the Yung 1. The 90’s inspired construction again epitomizes dadcore aesthetics, but at more than half the price, meaning you can join the dad shoe community for just £100.
