Preview of the best of the best from the High Street for Spring 2014

As I sit here watching the rain lash against the window and see people’s umbrellas blowing inside out, a shudder runs down my spine with the thought of the dirty miserable and generally crap old weather we’ve had, for what seems to have been an eternity. As a result of this and as somewhat of an escape from, I thought, right, the shops are full of Spring product and trends. So let’s cheer ourselves up by having a look at what some of our favourite brands on the high Street have on offer for us and what we can wear once the weather, finally, takes a turn for the better.

image

Not particularly known for their use of colour, look who’s got a Spring in their step this season, none other then Marks & Spencer, no less.

image

A brand who seem to be putting more and more emphasis of their menswear season after season, and it’s really showing, is Next. Showing how to put off the Floral trend for the more reserved male out there.

Spring can be unpredictable, weather wise, at the best of time, but Banana Republic cater for those layering moments which you need to prepare for every eventuality.

image

Next up a brand and an image who are HOT right now, River Island, if this floral ensemble doesn’t put you in the Spring mood and warm you up then nothing will. I maybe would wear from head to toe Floral but this image just shows what a big trend this flowery delight will be this season.

A man who’s well and truly making his mark at Debenhams is Patrick Grant with his Hammond & Co range for the brand. He’s totally bringing his design flavour to Debenhams and not diluting it at all. Offering excellent quality and cut at great prices, keep it up sir !

image

Errr a brand that we totally need to keep an eye on is New Look, their suiting range for Spring is sublime, mature, contemporary and sharp. Next time your lady asks you to come shopping with you where to go.

image

Adding a little seasonal colour to our life’s is TOPMAN, always highly directional ditch those pinstripes and shades of grey and embrace coloured suiting for Spring.

Showing us that the Floral trend needn’t be restricted to casual attire, H&M once again show us how it can be done in a more formal setting.

Brace your mainframe – get that Nautical look, without trying ! By Peter Brooker

In a bid to try and impress a cute girl in my local news-agent, I once bought an edition of ‘Yachting’. An editorial dedicated to the latest ground breaking news in the Yachting universe. Of course it didn’t work, and what was I expecting? For her to assume I have a yacht and become over whelmed in a fit of capricious passion that would result in her ripping off my clothes and ravaging me on the counter? So these days instead of buying a syndicated Yachting magazine, I simply kit myself in the kind of clobber that makes me look that I might actually know the difference between starboard and port. (Ps – Port is left. If you need help remembering that imagine the expression ‘there is no port left in the bottle‘, especially after I’ve had an hour in its company.image

There are a couple of numbers you can chance to pull off this look. If you’re feeling flush then this sweet little number from Folk is in the sale right now for 250 nicker. This is so up market you get a free yacht with it. I am of course joking. But if you want to stand at the helm and look like a pro, then this is my choice. However if your budget won’t allow for the pricey high echelons of nautical attire, then UCLA provide a more than adequate substitute. This UCLA Spears Puffa Jacket comes with a button fasten hood and zip fastening to the front as well as the two front pockets. The waist has a toggle drawstring fastening and tonal seam stitching. The Puffa forges close links with the equestrian and nautical sports. Clearly an item best seen worn when guzzling on the finest wines available to humanity, debating the beauties of an in-out driveway with your rich father-in-law on the quarterdeck aboard his brand new yacht.

imageNow its always important to remember to wear shoes with rubber soles to protect you from slipping on the wet deck. Either running shoes or deck shoes are the best choice. I can’t tell you the countless times I’ve stubbed a toe on a deck cleat for attempting not to wear shoes while aboard. Not too mention when I’ve been hit by lightning and cursed my laziness for not bothering to wear any rubber on my feet to neutralize the one billion volts going through my body. Check out these Keen’s Newport H2 sandals, very popular on the dock and on deck.

Socks are for life not just for Christmas – Socks don’t have to be boring

250x250_CMTM_BannerThe more ardent followers of Clothes-Make-the-Man will be aware of Richmonsocks.com and what a sterling job they have done in revolutionising, not a word I use lightly, the way we not only look at socks but purchase them. So when the talented Sarah Gilfillan of Sartorial Lab approached me with a shoot idea on the not so humble sock and using some of the brilliant socks available from Richmond Sock. Well, how could I refuse.

No Mistletoe required – Getting Office Party Attire Spot on

250x250_CMTM_BannerThis Friday night is, that night of the year, some see it as the most dreaded night on the calendar, whilst others count the days down from last years one. Yes, if you work in an Office environment the likelihood is you’ll  be heading off to your annual office party. Making an impact at this event is all too important, be too gregarious and your seen as not being professional. Staying quite and keeping yourself to yourself, your seen as being standoffish and not a leader of people. Plus not attending is not an option as then your seen as. not a committed member of staff, who sees himself as better then the rest and you can kiss goodbye to that promotion or pay rise.

If you feel you need a little more advise to avoid the minefield that is the Office Christmas Party take a look at this link from last year when we covered the do’s & don’ts etiquette of this nightmarish event.

Now to ensure you look your best for the big bash, we’ve selected  an outfit to cover each scenario that could possibly cover the Partay, we really are too good to you guys.

The casual Office event

So it might be a meal, drinks down the pub but essential quite an informal setting, where you don’t wanna rock up looking like you’ve made a real effort and overdressed for the occasion.

 Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 20.11.00
This is a winning choice from Barbour, as it shows your entering into the spirit of the Yuletide without going all out Christmas Jumper extravaganza.
Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 20.23.48
I know I’ve said this before but its an absolute staple, the Black Shirt, this one from Marks & Spencer, is a great all rounder. If the Christmas do takes a turn and you wanna take it onto a club or somewhere a little more upmarket you can whip the jumper off and it gives a completely different look to your outfit without having to go home and change. Plus if  you pair this with.
Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 20.32.15
A pair of chinos, my advise is keep the look simple you don’t wanna look like one of Santa’s lil helpers in your fair isle knit and red or green chinos so stay traditional. These are a great example from Ben Sherman and the reason for Chinos over jeans is simple, it gives you more options. Alot of establishments, particularly at this time of year aren’t welcoming of lads wearing jeans so do yourself a favour and make sure your night doesn’t come to and abrupt and early end.
Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 20.43.26Finish this look off with the highly versatile Finton from Grenson,  these lil lovelies can pretty much be worn with anything, they will see you through so many different occasions over the years. Not only timeless, they can be dressed up or down and still look great.

The Semi-casual event

Now this is when your boss is flashing the cash and has hired a venue for the Annual shindig, whether it be hotel, hall or even if its not been such a great year, pushed all the desks and chairs to the walls to make a dance floor and some room for Sharon from accounts Boyfriend Mark to show what he’s worth on the decks.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 21.10.13

This is a great look that sends out all the right messages, from yeah, I’ve made just the right amount of a effort, to Ohh yes I know how to put an outfit together effortlessly. This herringbone jacket and waistcoat combo can be bought as separates but also include a pair of trousers all from NEXT.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 21.30.30

These are a great pair of jeans from Oliver Spencer, Comfortable fit on the waist, front and back rise and a regular fit on the leg Dark Indigo Denim plus great value for money and will look great with this jacket and waistcoat.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 21.39.01

I’ve gone for a Chambray Oxford style shirt from Joules, rather then a white shirt as this can sometimes look too formal and you can easily smarten this look up with a navy tie and a pocket square. Plus it goes really well with the grey herringbone.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 21.46.43

Once again I’ve kept the outfit simple and finished it off with a classic pair of shoes, this time with Brogues from Oliver Sweeney. You want to keep things simple so there’s less for you to worry about and if you know you look good this will help with your confidence on the night. This look strikes a real balance and shows that you know what you’re doing.

The Formal event

So here you have it the final in the options for the Christmas Party looks to impress. The formal event, this is often when you have to attend a ball style function. Now once again you need to strike a balance of looking good, looking confident and standing out form the crowd for all the right reasons.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 21.59.58

Now this is a tuxedo that ticks all of those boxes from Banana Republic, you’re making a statement by going Navy rather then traditional black but at the same time looking totally dapper.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 22.09.47

You’ve made your statement with the Navy tux so you need to keep the rest of the look classic and sober. This is a brilliant dress shirt from the French brand Ami, which does does that, understated yet chic.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 22.18.19

Its all in the detail and this classic with a twist Black bow tie from TOPMAN finishes of this look perfectly, its just a little smaller then the traditional bow ties.

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 22.33.01

These are a great dress shoes from Ted Baker and aren’t too traditional so you can easily wear these on other occasions with jeans.

So whatever your Christmas party follow these tips and it should hold you in fine fettle so you can hold your head high come Monday Morning.

A satchel’s not just for your school years – The Cambridge Satchel Company

Image 2454We’ve all seen the Google Chrome advert showing us how the Cambridge Satchel Company started and I’d love to say, tut, it was all just a marketing ploy to target our good nature, but no its all true ! Julie Deane, the lady in the ad, founded The Cambridge Satchel Company in 2008 at her kitchen table just outside Cambridge. Having invested just £600 to get the idea off the ground, The Cambridge Satchel Company is now a pioneering business employing more than 90 people and experiencing phenomenally fast growth around the world.

The company is genuinely committed to preserving British manufacturing and in 2011 set up their first factory based in Leicester, employing many locally skilled craftsmen and women. 2 years on and the company has now moved premises to a new factory, still based just outside Leicester and the company also continues to support independent UK based manufacturers who help meet the ever-growing demand.

Whilst the traditional Vintage and Red Satchels remain the firm favourites among customers, the company has kept the design fresh by adding many modern twists to the original such as the fluorescent colours and contemporary leather finishes. Collaborations with Comme des Garcon, Basso and Brooke and Christopher Shannon have seen their bags grace the catwalk in London, New York, Paris and Russia.

And so for Winter 2013  and one of the most the most iconic of British Fashion designers,Vivienne Westwood has teamed up with the brand  to design and produce an exclusive collection of limited edition collector’s bags. Inspiration for this classic satchel is taken from Westwood’s infamous pirate boots first seen in her 1981 Collection entitled ‘Pirate’. The pale tan straps and buckles introduced on the satchel replicate the ones used on Vivienne Westwood’s pirate boots. For the legendary Pirate collection, Westwood and McLaren weaved a fantasy with swashbuckling clothes and highwaymen, dandies, buccaneers and pirates.  It was for this collection that the Squiggle print was first used.
