AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane MK1 – Classic Watch Design made for the Modern Man

AV-4041-01 MS04

By: Keanu Adorable

AVI-8, a watch brand based in Hong Kong launching into the UK is releasing a special edition of their Hawker Hurricane watch series. AVI-8’s main customer base in HK are your modern-day sneaker-heads, and we think it’s a good fit for our Clothes Make The Man readers.

True to form of the Hawker Hurricane chronographs, the Spinning roundel editions are similarly rounded and hint at a vintage influenced design, with historically correct font and numerical representations. The construction, design and layout of the Spinning roundel editions however represent a far more sophisticated level of design, and watch making prowess from AVI-8.

The highlight of this watch must be the quite remarkable layout of the chronograph sub-dial eye at the 12 o’clock position as it zips by to count off tenths of a second. The Roundels themselves are layered in different colours of painted film in the historic representations of roundel markings of Hurricanes that served in WW2. The various layers are then carefully assembled inside the dial to be, on one hand visible yet subtle in use.

Powered with absolute precision by a customized Japanese made Seiko TMI chronograph this unique modification of the traditional chronograph sports watch is no less accurate, or exacting in its performance. The Solid Marine Grade stainless steel is all the more rounded with a domed hardened sapphire coated lens assembled flush to the case for durability and visibility.

Tales of the unexpected- Tales of Thread

image

One of the real qualities of living in a vibrant, cosmopolitan, modern city like London is its ethic diversity and the delicious melting pot of cultures and arts which it serves up. One such contemporary example of this is Tales of Thread. A Luxe British/Ghanaian start-up which creates beautiful nightwear, ethically sourced for well travelled, design conscious folk.

Founded by Rebecca Fordham, who found herself travelled for long periods of time, as part of her job, often with a minimum of personal kit and in a multitude of climates. She realized there was a gap in the market for multi-purpose, easy-to-care for sleepwear featuring unique designs in the best possible materials, created in a transparent, positive and sustainable environment. The idea was to launch a brand which celebrates pan-African arts and design. The brand is inspired by her passion for textiles and a desire to create something beautiful wrapped up in her twenty-year love affair with the continent.

Inspired by the rich Textile heritage, which is central to the brand – the people and culture behind it – the first collection is inspired by Ghana’s Ashanti culture. Patterns include a beautiful fern motif that references the traditional Adinkra symbols found on pottery across the country, a bold geometric drawing on Ghana’s famous woven kente cloth, and a striking wave print.

imageTraditional arts and design methods such as batik wax and screen-printing are used to create the limited edition, hand printed quality pieces. Details include French seams, contrast piping, pockets and natural shell buttons. They are packaged in handmade laundry bags made from locally sourced cotton and recycled glass beads.

Tales of Thread is challenging the garment and fashion industry to improve their standards through a transparent and ethical supply chain. Made in female owned factories and workshops in Accra, Ghana, providing employment to 45 people. The predominantly female work force are paid above market wage and produce the garments in safe working conditions.

The collection includes pyjamas, nightshirts, camis and elegant kimono inspired lounge robes. Made from a super-soft blend of organic cotton and silk and designed with the belief that loungewear ought to be as elegant and wearable as daywear.

Offering a brighter future for British Underwear – Drake & Hutch

imageThree years ago we saw horrific events unfold at the Rana Plaza, Bangladesh as this sweat shop factory collapsed in on itself killing many of its workers, men, women, old and young and the ugly side of fashion has raised its head again. This time we see, Beyonce’s new Ivy Park range being hit with accusations that the workers who produce it on being paid as little as 63 cents an hour.

Labels are happy to spend vast sums of money on celebrity endorsements and social media selfies, but are far less keen to say how and where their clothing is made. Behind the scenes cost savings and aggressive margin targets are regularly applied. This is like building a skyscraper and skimping on the foundations to afford a nicer façade. Unfortunately customers are kept in the dark until the next scandal unfolds.

British label Drake & Hutch believes change is long overdue and plans to save the world one pair of pants at a time!

imageThey have broken away from the traditional closed door retail model and instead offer full transparency in production. A simple idea, from cotton grower to garment maker, every stage of production is advised for each luxury pair of pants they make. They compare their product to
being much like bespoke suiting, quality and attention to detail is at the heart of everything they produce.

Founder Pete McGuinness, built the brand on the philosophy that to create simple everyday clothing consisting of outstanding quality and attention to detail. As let’s face it underwear is the first thing you put on and the last you take off. As he himself says, “We offer a fantastic product that our customers love and the brand itself has a strong British feel and sense humor which allows it to stand out form the crowd.”

imageDrake & Hutch was 3 years in the making and it took two years to perfect the block on which their underwear is made and dreamt up while McGuiness was developing mens formal wear for, Jermyn St tailors, Charles Tyrwhitt. He thought it would be great idea to take some of the patterns and prints found in mens formal wear, ties, jacket linings, hankies and play around with them applying them to mens underwear.

He spent these three years working with factories all over the world looking for a supplier who could produce the outstanding quality I was looking for, was willing to work with me to develop the fit and feel of the fabric and also work in very limited quantities. While travelling it became clear to him those factories with the happiest staff, who are treated them well and paid fair wages, produced the best quality clothing.

I never set out looking to be the next big thing, I simply started Drake & Hutch out of a passion for cool, British themed clothing that is beautifully made. An enormous amount of my own personality has gone into the brand and I have loved every second of it, the incredible feedback we receive from customers really is the icing on the cake.”

Now as Father’s Day approaches we’ve worked with Drake & Hutch to offer all you good readers 20% discount from now until midnight (GMT-0) on 19th June by using the exclusive discount code CMTM2016
