Don’t Rage against the Jean Machine

imageThe principles behind Jean Machine are pretty simple, but aren’t all the best ideas, to offer great quality, well-cut jeans and casual men’s clothing.  If only everything in life could be so well executed.

The British brand started life in the 1970s, where Jean Machine was the definitive denim store on the King’s Road in London. In 2012, it was re-launched by Chloe Lonsdale, daughter of the founder, who wanted to deliver the same easy, effortless denim experience for the modern man.

The brand offers three clean, contemporary jeans fits at its core: JM1 (slim), JM2 (straight) and JM3 (relaxed). They are made from the highest quality fabrics sourced from Japanese and European mills, and available in a selection of timeless ‘never out of stock washes’ and unique seasonal finishes. The concise collection of ready to wear complements the denim and includes shirting, jersey, knitwear, outerwear and the Jean Machine signature Denim Jacket and as a result offers an uncomplicated style and concise wardrobe staples for the modern man.

imageFor Spring 14 Jean Machine are following the success of their partnership for Autumn-Winter 2013, with the second of a genius collaborations with the Italian Fashion House Missoni. The two family-run businesses have used their specialist expertise to create new denim styles and washes elevated with Missoni’s renown knits in their subtle colour palate of the season.

The collaboration will offer the classic JM2 straight leg jean in three new washed out, grain-effect tones: dusty green, mustard yellow and muted blue, and One Wash, an essential blue.

They will feature Missoni knit pocket bags in this season’s deep blue and black. The same colours will also be offered in a new trouser shape, the Luxor, designed specifically for Missoni. The Luxor is a smart denim-trouser with a fuller waistband and pleated front, and will also be available in Ecru. Jean Machine’s signature JM4 denim jacket will be customised with Missoni knit pockets and will be available in Ecru and One Wash.
The underside of the collar will be lined in Missoni knit and will be detachable.

Get your coat, you’ve pulled ! – Parka London

Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 15.38.39Parka London are a brand that appreciate the style, the design, the overall aesthetic appeal of the Parka, in fact they themselves profess to putting the parka on a pedestal, no less. Their brand ethic is clear –  PARKA designs classic yet modernist garments for free thinking individuals, which we most certainly are, who appreciate timeless design and are style conscious. Their aim is to curate a passionate love affair between you and your coat. It’s effortless style personified; throwing it on, feeling great, and having faith in your coat.

Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 15.38.18They are firm believers that it’s the innate details and little quirks that count. The special addition of detachable fur hoods, luxe linings, secret drawstrings and distinctive silhouettes make a coat a PARKA LONDON coat.

But please dear reader, do not disappear if the Parka isn’t your coat of choice for this season. Parka London could never be described as a one trick pony, definitely not. Another particular favourite of Clothes Make the Man is their interpretation of another classic,  the Harrison, this offers a classic peacoat silhouette with a touch of contemporary design and beautiful quality fabrication. Harrison is a wool double breasted peacoat with a grey marl contrast lapel, once again echoing their attention to detail.

Stutterheim state of mind – Stutterheim Raincoats

JAY Z x STUTTERHEIMStutterheim, mightn’t be a brand you think you’ve heard of before, but they recently worked along a number of high profile brands including Balmain, Lanvin and Balenciaga on a collaboration collection curated by Shawn Carter aka Jay Z and housed by the Uber retailer Barneys New York, entitled “A New York Holiday.”

The collection includes a black leather backpack from Balenciaga, a black square-print scarf from Balmain, a hoodie from Rick Owens, a tailored jacket from Lanvin, a black leather duffel with faux crocodile trim from Proenza Schouler and an 18-karat-gold double ring from Hoorsenbuhs. Though a majority of the brands involved worked on a single piece, a few explored further territory. The Elder Statesman, for example, created a black-and-ivory color-blocked cashmere blanket as well as a cashmere ski mask, OK. Jay Z conceived the entire range within a white, black, silver and gold color scheme.

“This is my first collaboration, as my rain project is quite new,” said Stutterheim creative director and founder Alexander Stutterheim, who crafted a raincoat with gold snap buttons for the assortment. “Initially, I had intended for it to remain a solo project because I did not want anything to compromise my ideas and design, but I have always appreciated Jay Z’s unique creativity. He also seems like a nice person, husband and father, which is just as important to me.

1_1_3However, Stutterheim’s back story is as interesting as any project with Mr Z, his range is very much inspired by his Grandfather and impressive muse who was a poetry writing Fisherman by day and managed a local theatre in Stockholm by night. One day when he was in his Grandfather’s barn he came across his old rain coat. He describes it as, “It was both stunningly cool and very practical (although as big as a tent). With great care, I brought it back home to my kitchen and imagined it in an updated, contemporary version. A homage to my granddad, and the quest for life”.

After what can only be described as a labour of Love, Stutterheim, with the help of a couple of skilled craftsmen & women, who opposed great attention to materials and detail they realised their raincoats should be handmade. A great way to honour his granddad’s durable and practical raincoat.

The coat. With all its seams taped and sealed, in the very best quality. Handmade and with a discreet, classical cut. The first 200 coats – Arholma Svart – were made and sold in his apartment. Each coat was signed and numbered by the seamstress, as they still are,  to really make sure the quality matched the very highest of standards. However, after a couple of months, (when his neighbours became suspicious of all the people in black rain coats)  Alexander had to move the business to another location.

Offering the best of both world, Looking good, feeling safe – Matchless London

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 11.41.39Matchless is a brand which can boast many firsts, from not only being the oldest British brand of motorcycles, clothing and accessories, with the first product manufactured at the end of the 19th century. Also, did you know, a Matchless motorcycle won the inaugural TT in 1907 and again in 1909. Plus, the brand was the first motorcycle manufacturer to work on rider safety, creating a department of study where clothing was designed to protect riders.  Now then, don’t ever let anything tell you  Clothes-Make-the-Man isn’t educational !

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 11.48.40From as far back as the 1960’s Matchless advertisements showed for the first time the link between motorcycles and style. Leading riders of all disciplines chose Matchless products for the perfect mix of safety, performance and of course timeless style. The first Matchless motorcycle was made in 1899, and manufacture began in 1901. All motorcycles were marked by a winged M on the tank, symbol that shortly became synonymous of quality.

Malcolm’s talent on two-wheels earned him a co-starring role in Bruce Brown’s 1970’s classic motorcycle epic, “On Any Sunday” with Steve McQueen.
