The World’s Top 5 Most Expensive Trainers Ever Sold

Sneakerheads are among the most fervent of collectors. When it comes to unique trainers, they’re not messing around! We all know someone who is particularly proud of their esteemed collection, and our obsession with trainers is only growing. Celebrities such as DJ Khaled, John Mayer, and Kylie Jennerare among the most high profile sneakerheads out there. These celebs regularly post pictures of their favourite trainers on Instagram, spurring on the trend that none of us are able to resist.

Some special trainers, however, have shown us just how far a sneaker obsession can go. A select few shoes have really captured collectors’ imaginations and have sold for unbelievable amounts of money. Whether a vintage limited edition or a pair of trainers worn by an A-lister, there have been some extremely sought-after men’s and women’s trainers over the years. Some have stood out from the rest, fetching record-breaking prices at auction.

Let’s find out which trainers have topped the charts and cemented their place in history.

5th place: Nike Air Jordan 12

Selling for an incredible £75,220 in 2016, these well-worn trainers proved the combined power of classic sneakers and celebrity endorsement. The shoes shot to fame after Michael Jordan wore them in 1997 for his famous ‘flu game’ (a game in which he managed to score 38 points despite being ill). After the game, Jordan gave the signed sneakers to a ball boy, who later made a hefty profit from the iconic shoes.

4th place: Nike Mag Self-Lacing Trainers

Inspired by a pop-culture classic, these fun and futuristic trainers fetched £143,580 in 2016. These sneakers were sold by the Michael J. Fox Foundation (which funds research into Parkinson’s disease), and they were designed based on Fox’s 1989 hit film, Back to the Future Part II. No true sneakerhead could resist getting their hands on their very own pair of self-lacing trainers!

3rd place: Nike Waffle Racing Flat “Moon Shoe”

The third most expensive trainers of all time were a pair of the extremely limited edition “Moon Shoes”, handmade by Nike’s co-founder, Bill Bowerman. This pair of historic sneakers sold for an impressive £314,075 ($437,500) in 2019. As the story goes, the sole of these early prototypes was created when Bowerman decided to experiment with his wife’s waffle iron. By pouring rubber into the waffle iron mould, the first ‘waffle sole’ was created – a major innovation in the trainer world. These particular sneakers soon became known as the “Moon Shoe” because of the resemblance between the waffle sole and the impression left on the surface of the moon by the astronauts who first made it there in 1969.

2nd place: Nike Air Jordan 1s

The signature of Michael Jordan, the undeniable king of sneakers, reappears in second place on these iconic Nike Air Jordan 1s. These trainers sold for £402,015.60 ($560,000) at Sotheby’s in 2020, breaking the record for the most expensive trainers ever at the time. When they went to auction, these shoes were only expected to fetch between £71,780 and £107,670, but they ended up selling for nearly five times that price. Michael Jordan’s signature in permanent marker on the right shoe certainly sweetened the deal, not to mention the fact that he wore these very trainers in a game in 1985.

1st place: Nike Air Yeezy 1

Michael Jordan, move aside. A new player has entered the arena. Earlier this year, the world record for the most expensive trainers was smashed once again with the sale of a pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1s for a breathtaking £1.2 million ($1.8 million). These A-List sneakers were worn by Kanye West during his performance of ‘Hey Mama’ and ‘Stronger’ at the 50th annual Grammy awards in 2008. One of the first pairs designed by Kanye West with Nike, these iconic shoes feature classic Yeezy design signatures, including the Yeezy forefoot strap and the “Y” medallion lace locks in vivid pink. This incredible sale blew the previous 2020 world record out of the water, nearly tripling the amount fetched by the Nike Air Jordan 1s.

Every one of these sneakers is iconic in its own unique way. From movie-inspired classics to pop-star sneaker royalty, they’ve all proved that people are eager to get their hands on famous trainers. There’s no limit to the amount of money that people will fork out for a once-in-a-lifetime auction opportunity! With the world record for the most expensive trainers being shattered on a yearly basis, who knows which major-league kicks will smash the record next?

Saving the world one pair of underwear at a time – ONE ESSENTIALS

Following a career working for the likes of Barbour and Monsoon, Carrie Davies felt trapped and unable to make real, positive progress towards ethical fashion. Whilst studying at the leading and prestigious, London College of Fashion, one of Carrie’s tutors was Professor Dilys Williams, the founder and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, who obviously had a profound effect on here ethos and thinking.

ONE Essentials was later born, focusing on creating beautiful, high quality pieces – and starting with the most disposable item in our wardrobe; underwear. It also provides a full, transparent update on product impact throughout each stage of the customer journey.

“I wanted to start with the most hardworking items in our wardrobes, the ones that get the most wear and use, but we often think the least about. So I focused on the one piece we all throw away, – underwear, an item that’s truly disposable. ONE Essentials is here to change all of that”

Making positive choices… There is no reason why the items we wear everyday should be the most disposable. Everything at ONE Essentials is designed with the end in mind and manufactured for maximum utility, minimal waste and the least possible harm. The brand has developed a circular business model, directly addressing the environmental cost of the fashion industry. Biodegradable, natural and non-toxic fabrics and materials (even the stretchy bits) are used throughout the collection.

Every piece is designed to last, but the brand will collect and recycle your garments if you decide you are done with them. For those that feel uncomfortable returning underwear (we get it!), there is another eco-solution for the most ‘disposable’ item in our wardrobe. ONE Essentials underwear has replaced convention elastane, which goes nowhere, with an innovative biodegradable alternative.

Tracking positive impact… Each item has its LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) data beside it in the Shop section. This follows through the customer journey into the cart and shows information such as liters of water saved, grams of fertiliser avoided, CO2e emissions avoided and kWh of energy saved – all provided in actuals and more tangible equivalents. For example, just one of the ONE Essentials t-shirts saves 0.3kg of CO2e, or 1.3km of driving emissions. There is even a calculator available which shows the total ecological impact of the brand, continually updated with each sale taken on the website.

Each of the pieces have a supply chain transparency score; you can read all about where each piece comes from, including a list of working hours, average employee salary per month, last audit dates and percentages of female managers, on the ONE Essentials website.

All LCA data is all verified via a third party called Green Story.

Once you’ve seen the positive impact figures, why would you ever go back? Just a snapshots of this shows that ONE Essentials t-shirts save 890L of water, compared to t-shirts made using 100% conventional cotton. The men’s boxers save 427L and women’s briefs 243L.

In addition to this, ONE Essentials has a 1% Pledge, which comes direct from sales (not profit) and goes towards textile cleanup initiatives. The current partner being the OR Foundation, a USA and Ghana based not-for-profit, working to minimise waste in the fashion industry and to protect the vulnerable people working within it.

The collection includes unisex t-shirts (£45), unisex everyday sweatshirts (£70), ladies midrise briefs (starting at £19 for one pair and also available in multipacks, up to size 20) and men’s boxer briefs (starting at  £24 for one pair and also available in multipacks) saving up to 25% when buying in multiples.

Mens Fashion Staples For A Vintage 80’s Look in 2022

Words by Daisy Moss

80’s fashion has come back into style in a major way over the last few years, with the bold fits, bright colours and bold combinations really resonating with our generation. If you are wanting to add some vintage 80’s pieces to your wardrobe, we are here to introduce the absolute staples that you will keep reaching for!

Loose Fitting Blue Denim Jeans

The first staple on our list of 80’s mens fashion staples is a pair of loose fitting blue denim jeans. This is an absolute classic that will be a base for any vintage 80’s outfit that you put together. Loose fitting jeans are a staple of the 80’s, with cropped styles also being popular. Any shade of blue jeans can work well!

For a summer look, tuck an oversized t-shirt into the blue jeans with a belt and white trainers for a simply effortless style. Layer over an oversized short sleeve shirt for an extra detail, or tuck in an oversized sweatshirt for a casual look perfect for off-duty days.

Overall, with a pair of loose fitting blue denim jeans, it will be easy to put together any 80’s vintage outfit.

Bright Colours

In terms of colour, anything bright colours fit in well with the 80’s theme. Bright colours convey youth, innocence and optimism, all ideas that were highly desired by society in the 80’s. Pop culture was also a significant part of 80’s culture, where bright colours were plastered. The extreme fashions seen throughout the 1980’s were heavily dominated by colour, helping people to show off their identity and find their sense of style.

A great way to incorporate bright colours into your 80’s vintage wardrobe is with oversized coloured tees. Pick a few bold and bright tees for your wardrobe and you will always have a simple 80’s look ready to pull out! For something a bit bolder, North Face’s retro range is ideal!

Bomber Jacket

For the cooler months, having a bomber jacket on hand is essential. For casual looks especially, this is an 80’s staple. Bomber jackets were made with a variety of different materials, including denim, leather, vinyl and suede. Worn by men and women of all ages, this easy-to-throw-on jacket is another diverse piece that can go with almost everything.

This is a great opportunity to find your own personal style in terms of the fit, material and colour.

Vintage Jewellery

The next essential in your 80’s mens fashion staples are vintage jewellery and rings. Gold chains, pendants and rings were especially popular in the 80’s and were often layered with multiple pieces to create a bold look. Much like the clothing, 80’s jewellery was designed to make a big statement. For authentic pieces, go with vintage jewellery, or choose pieces with a modern touch for something a bit different.

The main thing to remember here is go for gold and don’t be afraid to layer, especially when the rest of your outfit is more simple!

Double Denim

Saving one of the best until last, double denim was an absolute staple in the 80’s. Double denim was an everyday look for men and women, often with white trainers. We’re already halfway there with our loose fitting blue jeans, so get yourself an oversized blue denim shirt that you can tuck into the jeans or style your jeans with a white t-shirt and denim jacket.

This look works best when the shades of blue are different, as long as you wear it with confidence! Break the outfit up with a belt and keep the rest of your outfit simple to really master this look.

Final Thoughts
80’s fashion is back and here to stay, so now is the perfect time to upgrade your wardrobe with a few of these staples!
