A tale of two cities – Acqua di Parma presents Colonia Limited Edition, designed by Dr Samuel Ross

Acqua di Parma presents Colonia Limited Edition, designed by Samuel Ross — a reimagining of its signature fragrance bottle by SR_A, Ross’ London-based, industrial design studio.

SR_A was debuted by Samuel Ross at the Hublot Design Prize exhibition in the Serpentine Gallery in 2019, SR_A (Samuel Ross and Associates) is a design-led studio operating within the fields of luxury industrial design, interior installation, architecture, furniture and sound design and visual communication

As the first iteration of a three-year partnership between Acqua di Parma and SR_A, the iconic Colonia — presented at Design Miami — is an artistic play on duality. A project of both conservation and renovation, Colonia Limited Edition by Samuel Ross reshuffles the design codes of each Maison to create an entirely new blueprint. It will drop globally in March 2023.

As regular readers will know, Acqua di Parma was founded in Italy in 1916, with Colonia its debut fragrance. Colonia Limited Edition, designed by Samuel Ross celebrates the timelessness of its signature scent, which has endured, unchanged, for more than 100 years. Samuel Ross’ dynamic interpretation of Colonia is an ode to the past, funnelled through his contemporary lens to create a vision of the future.

Exuberant and industrialist, multi-disciplinary artist and designer Samuel Ross looked to the architecture and attitudes of London and Milan as the foundation point for inspiration. Informed by the structures of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, Ross imagined the sun — an eternal source of inspiration for Acqua di Parma — glazing across a European cityscape. The vantage points of light informed the vision.

London’s urban brutalism is represented in a hyper-flat, uber-pigmented yellow that absorbs the light: a reimagining of Acqua di Parma’s signature colour, which formed the starting point for this collaboration. It is a jolt to the senses: this optimistic hue synonymous with Acqua di Parma is imprinted with SR_A’s visual handwriting. Sun_Rise_Yellow will be juxtaposed with primary shades of Grass_Blade_Green and Ultra_Orange, an industrial nod to Samuel Ross’ own practice. This evolution of palette forms a new design language that pays homage to the heritage of Italian and British modernism.

The iconic Art Deco bottle remains: the juice itself, consistent as an Italian golden citrus- blend since its first unveiling in 1916, is a timeless masterpiece, and the bottle a scaffold for display. Prismic points of interest are discovered as light refracts off its angles: Colonia Limited Edition designed by Samuel Ross is a tangible sculpture created with a digital-first audience in mind. Hold the bottle up to the light and watch it transform. The object becomes interactive, creating thoughtful images to cherish throughout the day as one might recall a moment of sunlight — think midday sunlight refracting off The Centre Pompidou, or The Shard. Such beauty is in the eye of each beholder.

Crafted in Italy, Acqua di Parma Colonia Limited Edition, designed by Samuel Ross will be released globally on March 15. 300 numbered, special-edition collectors bottles, spanning the three colours in ascending order, will be released on March 1. Each will come with an exclusive art publication featuring behind-the-scenes stories and visuals.

Ahead of the Trend: The Freshest Street Style Trends of 2023

When it comes to fashion, if you’re not first, you’re last. The convergence between streetwear and high fashion has seen high-end clothing brands taking cues from the streets when delivering new collections, placing streetwear at the cutting edge of today’s trends.

Whether via collaboration, like adidas x Gucci and Supreme x Louis Vuitton, or through homage and inspiration, the relationship between streetwear and high fashion is more symbiotic than ever. Here, the streetwear experts at East End mainstay King Apparel take a look at some of the trends you can expect to see and wear in 2023.

Grunge/emo styles

Grunge is back, but not in the way you might know it. Vintage, baggy styles are in, propelled by the modern emo aesthetic of stateside stars like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti. Expect to see frayed detailing and acid washing in a nod to the ‘90s fashion choices of Nirvana and Soundgarden.

Likewise, 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for denim, with this year’s trends also harking back to the that relaxed 90s aesthetic. Look for laid-back, roomy jeans and jackets in airy mid- and stone-washes and (whisper it) dont be afraid of double denim this year!

Year of the Water Rabbit

With the advent of the Lunar New Year, streetwear and high fashion brands aplenty have celebrated the occasion with capsule collections dedicated to the Year of the Water Rabbit. Gucci’s new collection incorporates the rabbit into bright knits, tees and shoes, whilst Tommy Hilfiger partnered with Miffy for a more minimalist take on bunny branding.

Meanwhile, Adidas collab’d with football teams including Juventus and Manchester United to incorporate Chinese-style branding into streetwear staples such as bomber jackets, football shirts and backpacks.

Technical gear

Techwear is poised to remain extremely popular in 2023, with the sustained popularity of brands like And Wander and Arc’Teryx, and exciting new drops from heritage brands like Nike ACG and The North Face’s Black and Purple Labels.

Techy styles and light, waterproof fabrics are likely to be adopted by a growing range of brands and across all departments, from trousers to accessories. In 2023, expect to see plenty of zips, utilitarian pockets and statement straps, buckles and clasps.

Logomania

Big, statement pieces are set to play a huge role in streetwear in 2023, with logos at the heart of the offering. Your favourite brands are likely to be heavily using spellout logos in untraditional places, helped in part by the success of Corteiz’s customary crotch logos.

Vintage sportswear is another subsection of streetwear that has been swept up by logomania. Classic football shirts have been growing in popularity, with various designers creating their own versions on stone-cold classics. What looks like a vintage football shirt might, at closer inspection, turn out to be a streetwear homage.

Gender-fluid styles

This is your cue to take more risks with your clothing choices this year! Attitudes are shifting, and a growing number of men are incorporating elements of traditionally female clothing into their ‘fits. Now, we’re not saying you should wear dresses (unless you’re totally comfortable with it!) but combining traditionally masculine and feminine clothing can open your wardrobe right up!

Don’t be afraid to incorporate hints of femininity like light scarves and pastel hues alongside classic masculine designs like camo and combat boots for maximum effect.

Paul Linton, Creative Director at King Apparel comments: “With the trends above, you can get ahead of the game and make a statement with your fashion choices this year. It’s great to see so much variety and originality in streetwear at the moment, with people adding their own twist onto timeless streetwear staples. The applications are endless try combining some of the above trends to build your own style, like bold, brash logos with distressed, frayed denim.

SURVEY SHOWS BRITS ARE EMBRACING THEIR SILVER STREAKS

George Clooney has been crowned the world’s sexiest grey, according to new research. The 61-year-old film star has been rocking his famous grey locks since 2009, when he joked that he was shocked to see his silver mane on screen.

Coming in second place is British actress, Helen Mirren, who decided to embrace her natural colour after playing her role as Queen Charlotte in The Madness of King George.

Other stars who have embraced their silver streaks, include American actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Richard Gere, Idris Elba, and Meryl Streep.

Also featuring in list, compiled by insights agency, Perspectus Global, was Salma Hayek who recently revealed her silver streaks in a Instagram beach shot along with the caption ‘Proud of my white hair’.

And it seems Brits are accepting the move towards embracing their greys, with a third (28 percent) of over 40s admitting that natural grey hair is SEXIER than dyed locks.

One in four (22 percent) reckon grey hair looks mature and sophisticated, while a quarter (28 percent) say they are embracing their silver because they are worried about the condition of their hair from constant colouring.

Other names to feature in the sexy silver list include Harrison Ford, Barack Obama, Colin Firth, Sarah Jessica Parker and former Friends star, Matt LeBlanc.

One in ten (nine percent) have stopped colouring their hair to save both time and money.

Of those that are still dying their hair, a fifth (21 percent) are going to embrace their greys one day, with a tenth (10 percent) tempted to make the transition sooner rather than later.

One in ten (10 percent) admit to being inspired by social media accounts and celebrities to stop colouring their hair.

Harriet Scott, CEO of Perspectus Global commented, “The survey findings suggest Brits believe silver is sexy, and it is great to see how many are now ditching the hair dye and embracing their natural colour.

“It is also great to see George Clooney come top in the poll, along with so many other gorgeous grey stars.”

More than half (51 percent) of those polled agreed that as a result of celebrities embracing their grey hair more, people are letting their natural hair grow through.

One in three (36 percent) believe it is now more acceptable to go grey and that there is less stigma about not covering up them up (36 percent).

A third (35 percent) love how their natural hair looks, while a further one in three (32 percent) believe it looks really cool.

A quarter (28 percent) think the times are changing and less men and women will colour their hair in future to hide the greys.

This shift could be down to the lockdown when one in four (28 percent) started to embrace their greys and stop colouring their hair.
