Watch out for Santa – 7 of the best watches for Christmas Presents

image

Terry Markham, Senior Buyer, WatchShop.com

Terry Markham is honest enough to admit that he didn’t know the difference between a quartz movement and a self-winding movement of a watch when he started out in his career as a sales associate with SDK Jewellers in Reading in 2006. But, by God he soon learned, and specialised in watches within the sales team. In less than a year of his joining the company, the owner’s son, Kishore, launched a website (then known as watchshopuk), and Terry began picking and packing watches in addition to handling the shop requirements for watches.

After a brief hiatus in the automotive industry in 2007, Terry was brought back to manage the physical store, but soon began helping the directors with ordering stock for the store and the fast growing online venture now known as WatchShop.com, the UK’s leading online watch retailer.

To perpetuate Terry’s interest in all things watch like, he collects watches, from World War II until the present day, as every timepiece has subtle nuances and understanding and appreciating them allows he to explain these to a wider audience. Today he gives his expert opinion on the 6 best watches for Men to give as Christmas present, or to be given to us;*

Timeless simplicity – Mondaine Watches

imageIngenuity and simplicity are often the elements that distinguish a truly iconic design classic from just an attractive design piece, think of classics like the Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair, the Original Volkswagon Beetle or even the I-pod. Responsible for the design of one of the most recognisable watch faces in the world, Mondaine is renowned for its iconic timeless designs inspired by such elements as the Swiss Railways clock and the Helvetica font. A master of combining simple unity of timeless design with innovation, craftsmanship and functionality, Mondaine exemplifies 20th century design. The brand’s Swiss heritage forms what some say is the heart of the brand.

imageThe original Mondaine collection houses the brand’s most recognised and signature styles, including the iconic, simplicity of the Mondaine Official Swiss Railways Watch which takes inspiration from the clock seen on all Swiss railway stations.

This season Mondaine introduces the Mondaine Helvetica No 1 Smart, unveiled at the Baselworld International Watch fair to rave reviews, the first-ever smartwatch to be launched by a Swiss watch brand. This collection is inspired by Helvetica, perhaps the most popular and widespread font ever created. By focusing on the simple unity of timeless Swiss design with innovation, craftsmanship and functionality, in contrast to other smartwatch launches, which focused more on the technical or communication aspects, Mondaine made the intriguing move of combining technology with horology. This Swiss-made watch, with the only indication that it had anything different about it being the sub-dial at 6 o’clock position, provides an analogue readout of the sleep and exercise data collected by the MotionX activity tracking software and App via sensors in the watch.

imageFollowing the success of this timepiece, Mondaine ‘smartened up’ five more of its heralded Helvetica models, including one special Subscription-only version, which is limited to 1957 pieces, in reference to the year Helvetica was born. Mondaine has remained true to itself by focusing on the simple unity of eminent timeless Swiss design. All the new Helvetica models have a 44mm case diameter, anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal and a matt brushed stainless steel case, and come in Black, Gold and White versions.

This ain’t no cover version – Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay “Black”

imageTudor Watches, a stable mate company of Rolex, left the UK market, some twelve years ago. Well they’re back. The brainchild of renowned watchmaker, Hans Wilsdorf. He first founded, Rolex,  then TUDOR, often referred to as the little sibling of Rolex. It blending the same unparalleled quality and dependability of a Rolex, with less of the “gulp, I’m too frightened to check my bank balance after buying” price point.

The Black Black Bay is the brand’s biggest release yet and a new version of the brand’s iconic Divers’ watch first introduced in 2012. Not to be mistaken for a re-edition, the new style utilises the aesthetic codes that contributed to the renown of the original submariner model of 1954, injected with modern touches to update its iconic status.

It features multiple references to the brand’s heritage combined with contemporary design elements – vividly embodying Tudor’s renewal process. Whilst the piece features the iconic red triangle of the unidirectional bezel used in the original model, the new style comes on either a brushed steel bracelet with clasp, leather or fabric straps. If in fact Mr Bond was looking for an alternative to his Seamaster he could do an awful lot worse than this lovely creation.
