Well the 31st Olympics is well and truly underway in the colourful Brazilian City of Rio and what an opening ceremony. Over the coming weeks we’re going to be witness to events in sports as diverse as the 400Metres to BMXing and Kayaking to Wrestling. And one legacy we have seen from the London 2012 Olympiad is the popularity of the Paralympics, which are due to commence on 7th September.

One of the many stars who emerged from the London games four years ago was Jonnie Peacock MBE, who not only won the hearts of a nation but Gold in the 100m T44 final, plus set a Paralympic record in the process.

During the Rio Games, his contesting of his title and record will surely be one the hottest ticket of the entire tournament due primarily to the likes of of local boy Alan Oliveira running on home turf and motor mouth and Jonnie’s biggest rival, American Richard Browne, trying to capture the Gold Metal from him.

Earlier this year we were lucky enough to catch up with this inspirational Olympic hero during his shoot for Menswear brand, Jacamo, as their face for Summer 2016. Ohh and remember GOOD LUCK JONNIE, AND BRING HOME GOLD !

TEXTUAL CONVERSATION WITH GRAEME GAUGHAN OF TOURNE DE TRANSMISSION

image

Behind the scenes photography by Harry Bradbury

Tourne de transmission [TDT] started life in late 2013 as a t-shirt label and an outlet for the ideas, inspiration and experience of its Creative director & Founder Graeme Gaughan who used hand sourced vintage images and classic newspaper designs to create a range of unisex, premium quality graphic t-shirts. TDT has now evolved into a full contemporary collection which also includes, bags, accessories and footwear.

Gaughan, leads the slightly schizophrenic existence of, by day or from 9 to 5, or there abouts, he is the co-Owner Director at the London-based public relations agency SANE Communications then balances the responsibilities and enjoyment of TDT, by night.

Rotating transmission is the literal translation of Tourne de Transmission: an analogy for the idea of combining visuals, textures and words with the result of generating a message.

TDT’s evolution has rather successfully, taken further steps into researching the culture clash between east and western clothing and as a result the brand is now stocked in some the worlds leading cutting edge fashion stores and has garnered a fan base of stylish A-list actors and music industry stars.

PREVIEW OF TOURNE DE TRANSMISSION SPRING/SUMMER 2017

TOURNE 3tOURNE 1Tourne 4TOURNE 3For the recent Spring/Summer 2017 Tourne de Transmission show during LC:M, we had exclusive behind the scene access before the show. Where we caught up with Graeme, who told us;

What’s your inspiration for your Autumn/Winter collection ?

Mostly a conversation I had with NYC based Artist Chris Dorland.  We started discussing working together and one of the themes we talked at length about was taking the idea that a lot of big billboards (including fashion mega brand billboard adverts) were made on huge coated canvas waterproof sheets (before a lot of digital ones ) and once finished with are discarded. Aid Charities are then collecting all these old billboard ad’s and then using them for shelters & tents for refugee camps and towns etc …. we both were drawn to this overt irony that these ads that are created to entice us to spend on “stuff” were being used for essentially the most important of human functions… shelter…

I then took this notion further by pushing this theory across into the clothes by taking silhouettes and fabrics out of their normal context and flipping them into new areas in fabrics they are not normally made in. And also making our own huge billboards and messing with the idea of ads to create our own message/commentary on these current state of things…

What are your favourite pieces  ?

I am most looking forward to a poncho, and how it works in the fabric that it would not normally be made in.. and seeing how a lot of the patchwork silhouettes we do are gona work with the new media we are creating via the billboards.

Textual Conversation – Tim Bret Day

image

After graduating from the London College of Printing Tim Bret Day began his career as a rock Photographer, but before long his head was turned by the bright lights and glamour of the Fashion industry. He honed his craft via commissions for iconic publications like The Face, Marie Claire and Elle. Through this his unique and distinctive style soon became, a much in demand, trademark. Before long, his individual and unconventional take on the world, caught the eye of countless brands and saw him shoot campaigns for the likes of Virgin Atlantic, Harvey Nichols, Mercedez, Nokia,Samsung and Sony. But it was his beautifully Risqué work with Agent Provocateur that stood out for all the right reasons.

Bret Day has had the pleasure of capturing moments with not only some of the beautiful women in the world such as Anna Friel, Grace Jones, Kylie Minogue, Helena Christensen and Erin O’Connor to some of the most iconic figures from recent popular culture including David Bowie, Mick Jagger, David Beckham and Bono.

imageIf you could have invented anything what would it be?

I wish I’d invented a cure for cancer.

If you had one day to live what would be your biggest regret ?

My biggest regret would be not spending enough time with my children.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by travelling, light and The National Gallery.

Who has been your favourite subject/individual to photograph ?

imageIf you could only wear one brand for the rest of your life who would it be?

Fav Designer for me would be Primark, cheap, disposable and comfortable. I do love clothes, but on others. McQueen, Balmain and DVF on my wife.

Who is your style icon?

Style Icon would have been Bowie or Bryan Ferry but in a deluded moment I would love to dress like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale….. just once.

What piece of clothing best describes you?

The piece of clothing that identifies me…. a North Face jacket with a small Liverpool FC badge on it. Stops me getting wet or cold.

Who would be your ideal diner guests?

Dinner guest would be a toss up between Grace Jones or Kenny Dalglish. I feel they have been wrongly branded and would love to know what they are really like. I photographed Grace and once we got over all the intimidation and surface stuff she was the most incredible warm person.

imageHow did you get into the industry, what was your big break?

My introduction to photography was a bit random but I found a collection of Paris Vogue (my dad was French) in my Dad’s office shortly after seeing The Eyes of Laura Mars at Slough Grenada. They were early covers of Janice Dickinson by Mike Rheinhardt. It was the editorial pictures inside that rocked me Newton, Guy Bourdin Jean Loup Sieff Dominique Issserman. I hung out with a bit of a bad crowd and this seemed like a way out.

My big break came at the end of assisting. I worked for someone who destroyed my confidence and after leaving I couldn’t get my act together. An editor at Honey Magazine who I had worked with dragged me out of my self pity and gave me some assignments and I never looked back. Thank you Pat, Kim and Judith.

If you could give your teenage self advice, what would it be?

Advice to teenage self (which I was given but never believed or did) Set a goal, aim high and think of a plan. My whole career has and still is completely random.

What track would always get you on the dance floor?

Almost impossible to get me on a dance floor but I adore music but anything funky. Sly Stone, Primal Scream, The OJays, Kendrick Lamaar, Daft Punk.

Best piece of advise you’ve ever been given and by whom?

Best bit of advice “If you tell lies you’ll get caught, you’ve got that type of face” My mum.imageimage

TEXTUAL CONVERSATION – JONNIE PEACOCK PT1

imageCan you believe it’s 4 years since London 2012 and the euphoria of the Olympic Games begin held in the British capital. In a matter of weeks representatives from pretty much every nation on the globe will be converging on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to compete in events from the Marathon to BMXing and Karate to Kayaking. One of the real highlights of the London Games was the emphasis, public demand and appetite for the Paralympics. One of the true stars who emerged from this event was Jonnie Peacock, or Jonnie Peacock MBE as I should call him, the inspirational sports star who won the 100m T44 final with a time of 10.90 seconds, claiming the gold and the Paralympic record in the process.

At just 22 Peacock is incredibly inspirational, not because of his disability, which in no way, shape or form, defines this athlete, but because of his star like quality, carisism and sense of humour. Jonnie was only 5 when he lost his right leg, below the knee after contracting Meningitis. But it’s been these admirable personality traits that have contributed to his winning ways and he’s gonna have to call on every possible jott of talent and mental steel to maintain his highly sort after Olympic Gold medal and record. This event will be the hottest ticket of the entire tournament with the likes of of local boy Alan Oliveira running on home turf and motor mouth and Jonnie’s biggest rival, American Richard Browne, snapping at his heels to take Gold.

Peacock prides himself on never letting or seeing his disability as a disadvantage and continues to break down taboos and stereotypes. So much so this season he makes history by becoming the first Paralympian to front a menswear fashion campaign.

Menswear retailer Jacamo has broken the mould by signing the gold medal-winning Paralympian to be the face of its Summer 2016 campaign, to help further promote body diversity and confidence. Particularly in the face of research carried out by the retailer which revealing a staggering 40% of men are not comfortable with the way they look.

What’s your favourite piece of clothing?
Black jeans. They’re my definite go to item and easy to put together with anything.

Have you ever bought a piece of clothing and regretted it?

‘Just run a bit faster’ by an anonymous fan (possibly my Mum).

If you could give your teenage self-advice, what would it be?
Ha Ha, I was only a teenager 3 years ago so it would be a very recent conversation!! It would probably be something along the lines of commit more to the things you care about, but then again, being a teenager is all about trying different things and winning and losing isn’t it?

What piece of clothing would you relegate to Room 101?
My deep V vest. See previous answer. Horrific!

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Current pop, last year was the year of Bieber and surely its all about Zayn this year!
